Scientific Study Areas

Toxicology is a scientific discipline involving the study of structure and mechanism related to the toxic effects of chemical agents and detection of poisoning. The history of poison is as old as the history of mankind. There is no poison in the classical sense. The dose is the chief criterion regarding the toxicity of a chemical. All substances are toxic under certain conditions. Every substance has a toxic dose. Right dose and right route of administration are important. If the dose is administered over the lethal dose or by an improper route, it causes structural and functional hazards on the cells of living organisms, and it can be fatal as well. This case is accepted as a toxic effect.

Toxicology literally involves integrated education, training and research in pharmaceutical fields. The underlying principle for studies is to provide medication safety for public. In fact, Toxicology is a challenging science that makes significant contributions to many fields of science in biology, chemistry and medicine. Department of Toxicology carries out collaborative studies and uses similar mechanisms with these disciplines. However, the main study area of toxicology is poisons and poisoning cases.

It is essential to have information about the beneficial use and adverse effects of the drug before the administration. It is also important to know that the conscious or accidental overdosing can result in intoxication or can be fatal. This emphasizes the importance of risk assessment. Both people and other living beings live with xenobitics or with other chemicals in their daily lives.
The Department of Toxicology, offers scientific research opportunities at the research labs and student labs under the supervision of experienced and competent academic staff. In addition, the Department conducts interdisciplinary and collaborative studies and projects.
As one of the basic disciplines in pharmacy education, toxicology is one of the education and research areas for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate studies.
